Defiance: Season 1

From the producers of Battlestar Galactica, Caprica and Farscape comes Defiance, the critically-acclaimed action-packed tale of courage and survival. It’s 2046 and over 30 years have passed since aliens arrived, changing life on Earth forever. In the frontier town of Defiance, a drifter-turned-lawkeeper (Grant Bowler, True Blood) and the newly-appointed mayor (Julie Benz, Dexter) attempt to lead the human and alien residents through the prejudices and politics that threaten the fragile peace they’ve fought for. Combining epic scope with the intrigue of a small-town drama, Defiance is science fiction at its best. Watch every riveting episode back-to-back and uninterrupted, with exclusive bonus content including deleted scenes and featurettes that go inside this incredible new world.

Lost in Space – The Complete First Season

Season 1 of the 1965 sci-fi favorite.Lost in Space began life in 1965 as a science-fiction take on The Swiss Family Robinson. Produced by Irwin Allen, then in the midst of his run of spectacular-but-childish TV sci-fi (before he became the master of big-screen disaster movies), the show featured a family of all-American space colonists cast away on a mysterious planet. Gradually the whole thing devolved into a silly (but sometimes fun) exercise in childish camp. This boxed set includes all 29 black and white episodes from the first season (with a burst of color at the end of the last show–a foretaste of the garish look of the remaining two seasons) along with “No Place to Hide,” the expensive pilot show that sold the series but prompted Allen to revamp the whole premise in comic mode when network execs responded best to its unintended humor.

“No Place to Hide” has action scenes that cropped up in the first six regular episodes but is missing several of the show’s trademark aspects, most notably that infectious theme from Johnny Williams (later, John Williams of Star Wars fame) and the scheming presence of Dr. Smith (Jonathan Harris) and his alternately menacing and comical robot (“It does not compute”). As the series progresses (or degenerates, depending on your taste), Harris’s Smith changes from pantomime villain, a saboteur who is trying to kill the family, into pantomime idiot whose foolishness, cowardice, and avarice are an endless source of plots. It mostly makes do with the regular cast plus an array of shaggy-suited, snarling aliens, but you do get sterling ham from visiting astronauts such as Warren Oates (“Welcome Stranger”), Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet (“War of the Robots”), and a very young Kurt Russell (“The Challenge”). Stories about surviving on an alien world give way to lifts from fairy tale, myth, and old movies as Smith gets hold of a wishing cap, becomes a giant, is chosen as a sacrificial king, turns the children over to an alien zoo, squeaks in fright as a werewolf approaches, or is cursed with a platinum Midas touch. –Kim Newman

Psych: The Complete Third Season

Fake psychic detective Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and his best friend Gus (Dulé Hill) are cracking the case – and cracking up audiences everywhere – in all 16 Season Three episodes from the quick-witted detective series Psych. After earning a reputation for taking on the unusual cases that leave most sleuths scratching their heads, Shawn and Gus are in for more mayhem this season as they tackle mysteries that range from the decidedly abnormal to the hauntingly paranormal. Join guest stars Cybill Shepherd (The L Word), Gary Cole (Pineapple Express), Phylicia Rashad (A Raisin in the Sun) and many more in this fresh and funny show that Maureen Ryan of Chicago Tribune declares, “Roday and Hill have the kind of chemistry you just can’t manufacture.”As Psych‘s second year drew to a close, Gus (Dulé Hill) had become a pharmaceutical rep and Shawn (James Roday) welcomed his long-lost mother, Madeleine (Cybill Shepherd), back to town. In all other respects, the show remains the same. Gus just has two jobs instead of one, and the detecting continues. Later, Shawn reconnects with his treasure-hunting Uncle Jack (Steven Weber) and former flame Abigail (Rachael Leigh Cook), who seems likely to return in the future. The same goes for Chief Vick’s sister, Coast Guard Commander Dunlap (Jane Lynch), who has eyes for the still-married Lassie (Timothy Omundson).

Other highlights include “Talk Derby to Me,” in which Jules (Maggie Lawson) infiltrates a roller-derby team in order to catch some thieves, “Lassie Did a Bad, Bad Thing,” in which Shawn and Gus race to protect their uptight colleague’s good name, “Tuesday, the 17th,” a surprisingly scary take-off on Friday the 13th, and “Murder?… Anyone?… Anyone?… Bueller?,” a high school reunion episode filled with references to the generation-defining films of the late John Hughes. And just to keep the fan worship going, Ferris Bueller‘s Alan Ruck and The Breakfast Club‘s All Sheedy make guest appearances during the season.

If this 16-episode set drags a little in the middle, Psych continues to bring the funny, and the entire cast has an appealing chemistry (we even find out a little more about Kirsten Nelson’s Vick, such as her affection for Phil Collins). Like previous sets, this one includes a gag reel, above-average deleted scenes, and 12 commentary tracks split three ways: audio, podcast (without show dialogue), and video (on-screen interviews with the writers about specific episodes). Granted, the doubling of overcast Vancouver for sunny Santa Barbara remains completely unconvincing, but you can’t win ’em all. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

The Flintstones – The Complete First Season

<![CDATA[

Flintstones, The: The Complete First Season (DVD)

Join the fun in the town of Bedrock with the this fabulously famous modern Stone-Age family. Mowing the lawn with a saw-toothed dinosaur, showering with water sprayed from a woolly mammoth’s trunk and eating brontosaurus burgers are everyday events for the lovable Fred and Wilma Flintstone and their friends Barney and Betty Rubble. Living in prehistoric times has its drawbacks, but the Flintstones and their neighbors survive in style. So have a yabba-dabba-doo time with the The Flintstones.

]]>Meet The Flintstones in this prehistoric Hanna-Barbera production. Primetime’s first animated series was also the longest running until The Simpsons came along. Not so coincidentally, the two shows aren’t all that different–even if the former emerged in the sixties, the latter in the eighties. Fred (Alan Reed), patriarch of the cave-dwelling clan, may be marginally more intelligent than the similarly blue collar Homer, but most storylines still revolve around his more dunderheaded moves. Fortunately, wife Wilma (Jean Vander Pyl) and Barney (Mel Blanc) and Betty Rubble (Bea Benaderet), their neighbors, are usually able to set things right. That was also true for Ralph Cramden of The Honeymooners, a direct influence (Reed even sounds like Jackie Gleason). But Ralph didn’t have a pet dinosaur and he did live in the Modern Age–if you can call the fifties “modern”–rather than the Stone Age.

This long-awaited DVD set includes all 28 episodes of the first season, including the lost Flagstones pilot. Notable segments include “Hot Lips Hannigan”–one of several riffs on beatnik culture–in which Fred, aka “The Velvet Smog,” sings and Barney beats the traps and “The Creature From the Tar Pits,” in which Fred fills in as Gary Granite’s stunt double in a Bedrock-set horror flick.

The Flintstones‘s first season introduced two timeless couples from another time. Its success led to a theatrical release, two live-action features, and countless specials and spin-offs. New viewers may be surprised to find that Dino doesn’t make his official entrance until episode 18 (“The Snorkasaurus Story”), that Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm aren’t in the first season at all, and that the famous theme won’t hit the airwaves until the third (replacing instrumental “Rise and Shine”). Those quirky quotes, however, were in effect from the start: “Wiiilmaaaaaaa!,” “Droll, very droll” and, especially, “Yabba-dabba-doo!!!” –Kathleen C. Fennessy

Lost: Season 5

The epic story of Lost twists, turns and time-shifts in its outstanding fifth season. Packed with bonus material, including a revealing interview with the cast and an exclusive behind-the-scenes feature, Lost is better than ever on DVD.

When destiny calls, the Oceanic 6 find their way back to the island. Discover what forced them to return, and find out the fate of all those who were left behind.

The answers to some of Losts most pressing questions are revealed in this spectacular 5-disc collection, complete with deleted scenes and an incredible vault of exclusive bonus features. The show that revolutionized primetime proves once again why its is television’s most addictive and creative series. You’d be crazy not to watch, proclaims Matt Roush of TV GuideSince Lost made its debut as a cult phenomenon in 2004, certain things seemed inconceivable. In its fourth year, some of those things, like a rescue, came to pass. The season ended with Locke (Terry O’Quinn) attempting to persuade the Oceanic Six to return, but he dies before that can happen–or so it appears–and where Jack (Matthew Fox) used to lead, Ben (Emmy nominee Michael Emerson) now takes the reins and convinces the survivors to fulfill Locke’s wish.

As producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse state in their commentary on the fifth-season premiere, “We’re doing time travel this year,” and the pile-up of flashbacks and flash-forwards will make even the most dedicated fan dizzy. Ben, Jack, Hurley (Jorge Garcia), Sayid (Naveen Andrews), Sun (Yunjin Kim), and Kate (Evangeline Lilly) arrive to find that Sawyer (Josh Holloway) and Juliet (Elizabeth Mitchell) have been part of the Dharma Initiative for three years. The writers also clarify the roles that Richard (Nestor Carbonell) and Daniel (Jeremy Davies) play in the island’s master plan, setting the stage for the prophecies of Daniel’s mother, Eloise Hawking (Fionnula Flanagan), to play a bigger part in the sixth and final season.

Dozens of other players flit in and out, some never to return. A few, such as Jin (Daniel Dae Kim), live again in the past. Lost could’ve wrapped things up in five years, as The Wire did, but the show continues to excite and surprise. As Lindelof and Cuse admit in the commentary, there’s a “fine line between confusion and mystery,” adding, “it makes more sense if you’re drunk.” Other extras include deleted scenes, featurettes, a “lost” episode of Mysteries of the Universe, and commentary from writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz on “He’s Our You,” a reference to Sayid, who tries to change the future by changing the past. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

Lost: Season 3

Find the answers you’ve been looking for in the explosive third season of the show USA TODAY calls “the most gorgeous, audacious, expansive series on network TV.” As the power of the island to both heal and destroy comes into sharp focus, the lines between good and evil are blurred and loyalties are challenged when the survivors of the crash become tangled within the lives of the Others. Plan your escape, and immerse yourself in all 23 episodes of Season Three. Go deeper than ever before in this seven-disc DVD box set, complete with hours of never-before-seen bonus features, including secrets from the world of the Others, behind-the-scenes featurettes, unprecedented access to the LOST writers’ room, and so much more. When it aired in 2006-07, Lost‘s third season was split into two, with a hefty break in between. This did nothing to help the already weirdly disparate direction the show was taking (Kate and Sawyer in zoo cages! Locke eating goop in a mud hut!), but when it finally righted its course halfway through–in particular that whopper of a finale–the drama series had left its irked fan base thrilled once again. This doesn’t mean, however, that you should skip through the first half of the season to get there, because quite a few questions find answers: what the Others are up to, the impact of turning that fail-safe key, the identity of the eye-patched man from the hatch’s video monitor. One of the series’ biggest curiosities from the past–how Locke ended up in that wheelchair in the first place–also gets its satisfying due. (The episode, “The Man from Tallahassee,” likely was a big contributor to Terry O’Quinn’s surprising–but long-deserved–Emmy win that year.)

Unfortunately, you do have to sit through a lot of aforementioned nuisances to get there. Season 3 kicks off with Jack (Matthew Fox), Kate (Evangeline Lilly), and Sawyer (Josh Holloway) held captive by the Others; Sayid (Naveen Andrews), Sun (Yunjin Kim), and Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) on a mission to rescue them; and Locke, Mr. Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) in the aftermath of the electromagnetic pulse that blew up the hatch. Spinning the storylines away from base camp alone wouldn’t have felt so disjointed were it not for the new characters simultaneously being introduced. First there’s Juliet, a mysterious member of the Others whose loyalty constantly comes into question as the season goes on. Played delicately by Elizabeth Mitchell (Gia, ER, Frequency), Juliet is in one turn a cold-blooded killer, by another turn a sympathetic friend; possibly both at once, possibly neither at all. (She’s also a terrific, albeit unwitting, threat to the Kate-Sawyer-Jack love triangle, which plays out more definitively this season.) On the other hand, there’s the now-infamous Nikki and Paulo (Kiele Sanchez and Rodrigo Santoro), a tagalong couple who were cleverly woven into the previous seasons’ key moments but came to bear the brunt of fans’ ire toward the show (Sawyer humorously echoed the sentiments by remarking, “Who the hell are you?”). By the end of the season, at least two major characters die, another is told he/she will die within months, major new threats are unveiled, and–as mentioned before–the two-part season finale restores your faith in the series.

The extras are as well-stocked as a Dharma Initiative food pantry on this seven-disc set. Commentaries by producer Damon Lindelof, show writers, and numerous cast members reveal a whole lot of juicy trivia; plus, the DVDs even provide a subtitle track for the commentary (rarely seen other than on foreign-language director’s commentaries) so you won’t miss a thing. “Lost Book Club” goes through the parallels between what characters are reading and the show’s storylines (The Wizard of Oz and Stephen King are heavily referenced). “Lost: On Location” gives a lot of insight to some of the biggest episodes, and “Lost in a Day” gives a 24-hour glimpse at the drama’s arduous production. If you’re a Lost fan who gave up during this season, the bonus features alone might lure you back for the next round. –Ellen A. Kim
