The choir has always made beautiful music, but now, its two leading ladies have hit a sour note. Vi Rose (Queen Latifah) believes that a traditional style is the key to victory, but G.G. (Dolly Parton) thinks tried-and-true means tired-and-old. The two singers must find a harmonious chord or risk losing everything.

DREAMGIRLS- Deena (Beyoncé Knowles),Effie (Jennifer Hudson) and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose) form a music trio called the Dreamettes. When ambitious manager Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx) spots the act at a talent show, he offers the chance of a lifetime, to be backup singers for a national star (Eddie Murphy). Pokemon Triple Movie Collection: Movies 1-3 [DVD]

Collection of animated features based on the Pokémon characters created by Satoshi Tajiri. ‘Pokémon: The First Movie’ (1998) is set in modern-day Japan as Pokémon trainer Ash Ketchum (voice of Veronica Taylor) and his pet monster Pikachu (Ikue Otani) set off for a championship contest on New Island, hoping to qualify for a bout with the world’s greatest Pokémon master. However, the tournament is in fact a fake, set up by Mewtwo (Philip Bartlett), an evil and powerful Pokémon clone, who intends to use his psychic abilities to turn all the Pokémon in the world against their masters. In ‘Pokémon: The Movie 2000’ (1999) unscrupulous collector Lawrence III (Neil Stewart) is determined to add Moltres (Rikako Aikawa), Zapdos (Katsuyuki Konishi) and Articuno (Yumi Tôma) – the three largest Pokémon – to his hoard, and in so doing calls upon the legendary undersea creature Lugia (Koichi Yamadera). The abduction of Moltres has a devastating effect on Earth’s weather systems, with the result of Ash and his friends finding themselves stranded on Shamouti Island after a typhoon. There, Ash is claimed by the natives as The Chosen One – a being who can restore order by uniting three spheres in the local temple. With the aid of his Pokémon and rival trainers on Team Rocket, Ash sets about foiling Lawrence III’s evil scheme. Finally, in ‘Pokémon 3 – The Movie’ (2000), archaeologist Professor Hale (Dan Green) is hard at work studying ancient Pokémon when he stumbles across a strange unknown strain of pocket monsters which have the ability to give life to people’s fantasies. Professor Hale’s daughter Molly (Amy Birnbaum) then gets hold of these pocket monsters, but they unleash terrible creatures from her imagination; creatures which kidnap Molly’s mother and wreak havoc upon the surrounding area. The only man who can restore the situation is Ash Ketchum, and it’s not long before he leaps into action, ready to recapture the beasts and teach Molly about the dangers of pocket monsters.

The Bonesetter’s Daughter

A mother and daughter find what they share in their bones in this compelling novel from the bestselling author of The Joy Luck Club and Where the Past Begins: A Writer’s Memoir.

Ruth Young and her widowed mother have always had a difficult relationship. But when she discovers writings that vividly describe her mother’s tumultuous life growing up in China, Ruth discovers a side of LuLing that she never knew existed.

Transported to a backwoods village known as Immortal Heart, Ruth learns of secrets passed along by a mute nursemaid, Precious Auntie; of a cave where dragon bones are mined; of the crumbling ravine known as the End of the World; and of the curse that LuLing believes she released through betrayal. Within the calligraphied pages awaits the truth about a mother’s heart, secrets she cannot tell her daughter, yet hopes she will never forget…

Conjuring the pain of broken dreams and the power of myths, The Bonesetter’s Daughter is an excavation of the human spirit: the past, its deepest wounds, its most profound hopes. At the beginning of Amy Tan’s fourth novel, two packets of papers written in Chinese calligraphy fall into the hands of Ruth Young. One bundle is titled Things I Know Are True and the other, Things I Must Not Forget. The author? That would be the protagonist’s mother, LuLing, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. In these documents the elderly matriarch, born in China in 1916, has set down a record of her birth and family history, determined to keep the facts from vanishing as her mind deteriorates.

A San Francisco career woman who makes her living by ghostwriting self-help books, Ruth has little idea of her mother’s past or true identity. What’s more, their relationship has tended to be an angry one. Still, Ruth recognizes the onset of LuLing’s decline–along with her own remorse over past rancor–and hires a translator to decipher the packets. She also resolves to “ask her mother to tell her about her life. For once, she would ask. She would listen. She would sit down and not be in a hurry or have anything else to do.”

Framed at either end by Ruth’s chapters, the central portion of The Bonesetter’s Daughter takes place in China in the remote, mountainous region where anthropologists discovered Peking Man in the 1920s. Here superstition and tradition rule over a succession of tiny villages. And here LuLing grows up under the watchful eye of her hideously scarred nursemaid, Precious Auntie. As she makes clear, it’s not an enviable setting:

I noticed the ripe stench of a pig pasture, the pockmarked land dug up by dragon-bone dream-seekers, the holes in the walls, the mud by the wells, the dustiness of the unpaved roads. I saw how all the women we passed, young and old, had the same bland face, sleepy eyes that were mirrors of their sleepy minds.

Nor is rural isolation the worst of it. LuLing’s family, a clan of ink makers, believes itself cursed by its connection to a local doctor, who cooks up his potions and remedies from human bones. And indeed, a great deal of bad luck befalls the narrator and her sister GaoLing before they can finally engineer their escape from China. Along the way, familial squabbles erupt around every corner, particularly among mothers, daughters, and sisters. And as she did in her earlier The Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan uses these conflicts to explore the intricate dynamic that exists between first-generation Americans and their immigrant elders. –Victoria JenkinsA mother and daughter find what they share in their bones in this compelling novel from the bestselling author of The Joy Luck Club and Where the Past Begins: A Writer’s Memoir.

Pachinko (National Book Award Finalist)

“There could only be a few winners, and a lot of losers. And yet we played on, because we had hope that we might be the lucky ones.”

In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant–and that her lover is married–she refuses to be bought. Instead, she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home, and to reject her son’s powerful father, sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through the generations.

Richly told and profoundly moving, Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty. From bustling street markets to the halls of Japan’s finest universities to the pachinko parlors of the criminal underworld, Lee’s complex and passionate characters–strong, stubborn women, devoted sisters and sons, fathers shaken by moral crisis–survive and thrive against the indifferent arc of history.
