Oz: The Complete Third Season

$70.00 for set of six season. All good DVDs, in original boxes.A volatile men-in-prison soap opera, fueled by testosterone and lubricated by blood, HBO’s Oz is addictive viewing. The third season of the most violent show on cable TV, set in a cage of concrete and steel and glass, opens with echoes of violence past. Miguel Alvarez (Kirk Acevedo) is in solitary confinement for brutally blinding a guard, one-time drug lord Simon Adebissi (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) mourns for his murdered father, and Tobias Beecher (Lee Tergesen) nurses bones broken by Aryan Brotherhood leader Schillinger (J.K. Simmons) and a heart broken by the betrayal of Keller (Law and Order: SVU‘s Christopher Meloni). Their stories of vengeance, redemption, and forgiveness anchor this season.

The show races through each episode with a driving pace that only intensifies the ferocity. But for all the show’s physical brutality, the most affecting violence is emotional, from the strange and savage love affair between Beecher and Keller to the escalating war of terror between Beecher and Schillinger. On a lighter note, this season marks the debut of both Miss Sally and new prison CO Sean Murphy (Robert Clohessy), whose understated strength is too often overlooked in the face of the show’s more explosive personalities. Season 3 ends pitched on a powder keg, with the fuse in the hands of the show’s most ferocious, unpredictable character. It’s the kind of promise that will have you slavering for season 4.

The three-disc set features all eight episodes along with a season 2 recap, episode recaps and previews, commentary on the episode “Unnatural Disasters” by writer-creator Tom Fontana and episode director Chazz Palmintieri, and 22 minutes of deleted scenes. –Sean Axmaker

Space Is The Place: The Lives And Times Of Sun Ra

Sun Ra, a.k.a. Herman Poole “Sonny” Blount (1914–1993), has been hailed as “one of the great big-band leaders, pianists, and surrealists of jazz” (New York Times) and as “the missing link between Duke Ellington and Public Enemy” (Rolling Stone). Composer, keyboardist, bandleader, philosopher, poet, and self-proclaimed extraterrestrial from Saturn, Sun Ra led his “Intergalactic Arkestra” of thirty-plus musicians in a career that ranged from boogie-woogie and swing to be-bop, free jazz, fusion, and New Age music. This definitive biography reveals the life, philosophy, and musical growth of one of the twentieth century’s greatest avant-garde musicians.
Born Herman Poole Blount in Alabama in 1914, he reinvented himself in the 1950s as Sun Ra, the great surrealist of jazz whose free-form performances with his Arkestra amply justified the description &quot’jspace music.” His mystical beliefs were equally avant-garde; Yale professor John Szwed sympathetically explains some fairly far-out notions as “driven by a hunger for totality that only music could express.” Szwed recovers the biographical facts Sun Ra was often at pains to obscure, without losing sight of the overriding role imagination played in this visionary life.

Jazz in Silhouette

Now that his seminal, self-released Saturn albums are back in print, we thought we’d offer you this 1958 classic, which mixes the straight-ahead ( Enlightenment ) and spacey ( Ancient Aiethiopia ) as only the late Sun Ra could. “One of the most important jazz records since the war.” – Penguin Guide .

Leading the choir at his father’s church by day, while working as a busboy at a teen club by night, Cyrus is a talented rapper with just one thing holding him back – his lack of confidence. When a local music show announces that pop star Roxie (Coco Jones) – Cyrus’s former classmate and schoolboy crush – is judging a contest looking for the next big single, Cyrus submits a track. Much to his surprise, Cyrus wins, but he allows his ultra-confident best friend Kris (Trevor Jackson) to take all the credit, while he fades into the background, feeding him lyrics and rhymes. However, Cyrus’ music works too well, and when Kris finds himself getting Roxie’s affections and musical acclaim, Cyrus has to learn to speak up for himself. Will he take his rightful place on the stage and in Roxie’s heart? The Let It Shine: Extended Edition also features an exclusive scene where Cyrus takes on his nemesis, “Bling”, in his first-ever rap battle.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days

Everybody’s favorite wimp, Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon), is back for three times the fun in the latest film based on the super-popular book series! When Greg’s dad (Steve Zahn) threatens to send him to military school if he doesn’t stay out of trouble, Greg finds all-new ways to land himself in the doghouse! For starters, Greg’s in over his head when he pretends to work at the swanky country club where Rowley’s family has a membership. Things don’t go much better on a father-son camping trip with the Wilderness Explorers, and then there’s the Heffley’s new dog, Sweetie, who fetches even more trouble for Greg in this hilarious family film!Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, the third installment in the Wimpy Kid films, is sublimely funny for all ages. That’s a tall order, but it’s really true. The script, the jokes, the acting, the dialogue are all appropriate for pretty much all ages of children, but manage to be super-appealing to adults too. Zachary Gordon is back as Greg, the wimpy kid who just can’t quite square his true desires–to play video games all summer, indoors–with his well-meaning dad’s intention that he do something worthwhile, and preferably outside. When Greg starts hanging out at the swanky country club pool to be nearer his crush, Holly (Peyton List), he lets his dad (Steve Zahn) believe he’s gotten a job there. The jokes and gags are not highbrow, and yet director David Bowers and the talented cast and well-written script keep things moving along, if you will, swimmingly. What’s great about the Wimpy Kid films is that the kids are believable and on-trend, and yet wear age-appropriate clothes and don’t drop swear words. It’s endearing to see middle-schoolers treated as the almost-teens they are–emphasis on “almost.” Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days is truly a comedy that the whole family can enjoy together. —A.T. Hurley

Aladdin [VHS]

Robin Williams plays the genieDisney’s 1992 animated feature is a triumph of wit and skill. The high-tech artwork and graphics look great, the characters are strong, the familiar story is nicely augmented with an interesting villain (Jafar, voiced by Jonathan Freeman), and there’s an incredible hook atop the whole thing: Robin Williams’s frantically hilarious vocal performance as Aladdin’s genie. Even if one isn’t particularly moved by the love story between the title character (Scott Weinger) and his girlfriend Jasmine (Linda Larkin), you can easily get lost in Williams’s improvisational energy and the equally entertaining performances of Freeman and Gilbert Gottfried (as Jafar’s parrot). –Tom Keogh
